Contemporary Counterfeit Capped Bust Halves Census (April 3, 2019 update)

 

As would be expected immediately following the September 2010 publication of the Contemporary Counterfeit Capped Bust Half Dollars, 2nd Edition by Keith Davignon that included identification of the then known cast and struck varieties collectors of contemporary counterfeit Capped Bust half dollar continued to report their successful searches to add specimens to their collections.  In some cases the successful finds from multiple collectors were for the same variety and when combined equaled enough additional known specimens to have the variety's rarity designation updated (i.e. Davignon rarity occurrence levels:  1-2 = Rare, 3-5 =Very Scarce, 6-9 = Scarce, 10-19 = Common, 20-49 = Very Common, 50+ = Extremely Common).  Other finds were for single / first specimen discoveries of previously unknown varieties that were subsequently vetted / identified.  To communicate these and similar ongoing updates a periodic census is made listing by year all known varieties to date through the summarized collection inventories from a growing number of participating fellow collectors.  Listed in this section is the April 3, 2019 census update from 1,334 contemporary counterfeit Capped Bust half dollars encompassing 392 varieties.  Census counts for varieties that already have an Extremely Common rarity designation are not included in the census detail as their rarity can no further be updated beyond Extremely Common.  

[Note - It is important to realize that additional struck and cast contemporary counterfeit Capped Bust halves beyond the current census varieties are already known to exist! These additional struck and cast contemporary counterfeits are known to not match any vetted / identified Davignon variety yet these specimens are too worn / damaged / or for other reasons are not able to be vetted / identified as new discovery varieties, for example cast specimens that cannot be matched to either a specific Overton variety (1794-1836) nor Graham variety (1836-1839).  To see 20 of these unvetted specimens go to the New Discovery section of this website and look at the last entries.]      

Rarity updates along with census counts are highlighted in red to the left of the original 2nd Edition's September 2010 publication's comment for the variety.  Census lines are entirely highlighted in red for new discoveries, revettings, or varieties reidentified to another variety.   Details for the April 3, 2019 census update are:

  • 3 previously known varieties had their first specimens rediscovered (e.g. the known 1831 4/D variety Riddell No. 453, the known 1834 4/C variety Riddell No. 467, the known 1834 4/D variety Riddell No. 468 are in the publication  A Monograph of the Silver Dollar: Good and Bad of 1845 by John Leonard Riddell who worked for the New Orleans Mint), 
  • 60 varieties for which second specimens were found (i.e. these varieties previously had been identified as each having only one specimen known),
  • 70 varieties which have had their rarity designation updated by one rarity level,
  • 32 varieties which have had their rarity designation updated by two or more rarity levels, 
  • 64 discovery Davignon varieties previously unknown when the 2nd Edition was published that have been vetted / identified by multiple fellow collectors of contemporary counterfeit Capped Bust half dollars which can be explored in the New Discoveries section of this website,
  • 3 varieties which were revetted and reidentified as their own unique Davignon variety (e.g. 1830 2/Ba variety, 1835 18/R variety and 1842 2/A variety respectively found in the 2nd Edition Errors/Changes section of this website),
  • 18 previously identified varieties revetted and reidentified to be another existing vetted variety.
